In 1879, the United African Company was formed following the merger of four European companies trading up the River Niger: Alexander Miller Brothers & Company, Central African Trading Company Limited, West African Company Limited and James Pinnock. Uacn has demonstrated marked dynamism in it's over 108 years of operation in Nigeria. Its predecessors have included the Royal Niger Company and the African and Eastern Trading Corporation, which merged in 1929 to form the United African Company limited, a wholly owned Uniliver company. In March 1973, the name of the company was further changed to uac of Nigeria limited and to the present uac of Nigeria plc in 1991. The Foods Division was known as West African Cold Storage Company Limited between 1948 and 1973. Later in 1973, following the indigenization decree in Nigeria, Unilever divested out of uacn and it became a Nigerian company. Going down memory lane, in the1950's the business was concerned primarily with trading, by importing perishable Foods such as Ice cream, Frozen Meat, Fish, Butter, Vegetables and Fruits. The Foods Division was also in charge of storage and distribution of Planta Margarine for Lever Brothers. In 1961, the company moved out of trading and started on a small scale, Ice Cream manufacturing, Meat processing, production of Dog Food and Bacon. In 1967, the Foods Division stepped-up its production activities by packaging Luncheon Meat, Tomato Sauce, Vinegar and Black pudding. Fox Glacier mints were added in 1968. By 1974, the company took over the distribution of Ovaltine from Lipton. However until 1981, the company's activities were mainly trading. Though real manufacturing started in 1982, when the Business expanded its manufacturing portfolio to cater for the needs of the teeming population – the trade/consumers. Foods in 1989 was merged with Kingsway Fast Foods (an off-shoot of Kingsway Rendezvous, conceptualized in 1974), which was the restaurant arm of the former Kingsway Stores. Before the merger, a new restaurant concept, Mr. Bigg's, was introduced in August 1986 as a category under uac Foods. As a result of the merger, there was a need for expansion and this led to the movement of the factory from Ijora to Ojota complex. However in February 2001, Mr. Bigg's became a fully fledged division of its own, with the head office at Oregun. And it has today become the market leader in Fast Foods business. Moreso, on 1 st September 2006 uac Foods gave birth to uac Dairies formally known as Ice cream category of uac foods. uac Dairies is the producer of Supreme Ice cream, the leading brand of ice cream in Nigeria. Interstate Architects Ltd has its origins in an architectural practice established by William Harvey Watkins in Bristol, England in 1900. The firm was involved in design of domestic, commercial and health buildings in the southwest of England. A London office was established in 1936 to deal with the ever expanding of volume of work particularly in the field of housing in London. In 1938 the firm of W H Watkins won an open competition for the design of the proposed new St.Georges Hospital to be rebuilt at Hyde Park Corner, London, the design of which was prepared by Alexander Stuart Gray. Interstate Architects Ltd over the past fifty years has structured the company to provide its clients with the following portfolio of Services. The payment of these services is regulated by the Nigerian Institute of Architects.Property ManagementPreparation of Feasibility StudiesPreparation of Sketch DesignsPreparation of Working DrawingsAdvice on Contract ProceduresContract Supervision & Cost ControlNet Work ProgrammingInterior DesignLandscape DesignPerspectives, Models & PresentationsFacility ManagementSubsequently in May 1939 Alexander Gray became a partner and the name of the firm was changed to W.H. Watkins Gray and Partners. In 1952 the then Nigerian Government invited the firm of W.H. Watkins Gray & partners to design a Teaching Hospital for Nigeria in Ibadan and an office was set up in Lagos. Work expanded to such an extent that a new independent partnership was created and was called W.H.Watkins Gray Nigeria. In 1972 young Nigerians were invited to join the partnership and before the Enterprises Promotion Decree, Watkins Gray Woodgate already had Nigerian participation. It was decided in view of the intentions of the Enterprises Promotion Decree that the name of the firm be changed to Interstate Architects to emphasise its willingness to comply with the aspirations of the decree and become a broad based firm in all the States in the Country embracing all ethnic cultures. Interstate Architects found that a partnership was too restrictive to achieve its ambitions, which were to involve young talent in the firm and to make them responsible for the success of the firm and be rewarded accordingly. On the 13th of August, 1987 the firm was incorporated into a Limited Liability Company and became known as Interstate Architects Ltd. Interstate Architects Ltd though an independent Company did, however enter into bilateral Technical Agreements with Watkins Gray International and a number of other International firms to provide technology when required and be available to provide information in reciprocity if so required. As the Company grew, our staff were able to export our services abroad and specialists from Nigeria have visited other countries namely: Kenya, Zambia, Cameroon, Ghana, Ceylon and Hong Kong. We consider the relationship is essential for the growth of the company, internationally. From the original practice the company has grown into a substantial organisation with offices in Lagos, Abuja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Zaria and Enugu. The Company has an impressive record of most building types. It has specialized in Health Care projects and has made a major contribution to the country's Health care Programme. It has provided drawings and specifications for the health centers, primary health centers and comprehensive health centres, as well as also the brief for the Teaching Hospitals for all the States. The Company has been appointed as Consultant Architects to the Central Bank of Nigeria. Banking and security design has long been associated with the company and we have been retained by many Commercial Banks in the design of their buildings. Expertise in mass communication has brought to our studio's the design of the Radio and Television Studios and the company has been appointed consequently as consultants to the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and a number of State Television Corporations. In the commercial sector, the Company has carried out projects for many national and multi-national clients, which include Lever Brothers Nigeria Plc., UAC of Nigeria Plc., Triplex Glass of Nigeria Ltd., May & Baker Nigeria Plc., Bata Shoe, the Marubeni Corporation, Sterling Products Nigeria Plc., and International Computers Ltd. MOSHOOD ABIOLA POLYTECHNIC, ABEOKUTA (FORMERLY OGUN STATE POLYTECHNIC) The development of science and technology constitutes a key part of the process of modernization. The more this development occurs locally, the better for the society concerned. In realization of this, various Governments and even corporate bodies have continued to make significant investments in the development of indigenous capacities in science and technology. The establishment of Moshood Abiola (formerly Ogun State) Polytechnic was necessitated by the Federal Government white paper on National Policy on Education, which declared that: technical education forms the basis of technological development and as such, a greater proportion of educational expenditure would continually be devoted to technical education by government, both at the Federal and State levels. Besides, the Ogun State Government believes that the development of technical manpower is one of the reasonable investments that a nation can embark upon in a programme of nation and society transformation. Thus, the Ogun State Polytechnic was established under the provisions of section 3 of the law cited as the Ogun State Polytechnic Law No. 8 of 12 June, 1980 and reviewed as the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Edict, 1999. However, the first set of 220 students was admitted into the institution in January, 1979 with staff compliment of 25 academic and 5 senior administrative officers. By the 2004/2005 session, students' population had risen to 18,878 with about 520 academic and non-academic staff compliment. The Polytechnic commenced operation on two temporary campuses, namely: Oke-Egunya and Onikolobo. Movement of all departments from the temporary campuses to the permanent site at Ojere started in April 1985 and was completed in March, 1988. The Ojere campus is situated in the South-Eastern part of Abeokuta, off old Owode road and some 4km from Ibara, in the capital of Ogun State of Nigeria. The site which covers about 960 hectares of land is located on an undulating topography with some marked relief features and series of valleys which provide good scenery. It is a well drained site bounded in the south by River Ogun. Thus, the area is endowed with rich natural beauty and history. Arguably, the Polytechnic has a pride of place as one of the frontline tertiary institutions in the country today. This rating is not only in the area of academic attainments, but in the fields of research and practical contributions towards the technological development of Nigeria. Indeed, the institution has grown in leaps and bounds.
