Hotel Pension Palmquell was established in 1997 by Fritz and Trude Pfaffenthaler. Both are from the Steiermark region in Austria. Fritz visited the former South West Africa in 1968 on a trip around the world and fell in love with it. In 1971 he brought his wife and stayed for good. In the country of almost unlimited opportunities he started his own electrical shop but later joined a large company where he remained for 25 years. At the same time he and his wife also ran their own restaurant in downtown Windhoek for a while. In addition, Fritz Pfaffenthaler was Austria's honorary consul in Namibia from 1989 until 1995.
