Nyayo Discovery was set up by John Kweka (known to his friends and the local community as "Chaca"), a native Tanzanian of Chagga and Sukuma parents, and Lauren Sans from Britain, who grew up in North London and now resides in Tanzania. Chaca and Lauren have backgrounds in tourism and anthropology, and between them share almost 15 years' experience of working with student groups, study-abroad program operators, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), charities and volunteers; and in the safari industry. Both have a deep interest and profound respect for Tanzania's indigenous ethnic groups, their cultures, beliefs, histories and knowledge. They have spent many years working with the communities of Hadzabe, Chagga, Maasai and Barabaig long before the founding of Nyayo Discovery. As a result of this they have developed long-standing, trusting relationships with all of these communities so it seemed logical when Nyayo was set up to continue working with the people they have grown to know so well. This is the foundation on which Nyayo Discovery and its programs has been built and will continue to grow, and we believe is one of several reasons that make us unique.

We spend a bit more to buy sustainable charcoal made from discarded coconut husks, we have designed our own energy efficient water heaters for hot showers while camping on safari, our camps themselves are light weight and truly mobile, we pack out our trash… We don't believe one has to be uncomfortable to be eco-friendly, just a bit more creative.
