Food World is Zimbabwe's premier independently-owned supermarket group. Our company currently operates 6 branches in two cities, and employs over 700 team members from diverse backgrounds. Each of our branches has all the departments you would expect in a world-class supermarket concern: a grocery department stocking a full range of groceries and homewares, a bakery that bakes fresh bread, cakes and confectionary daily, a take-away that sells sumptuous hot meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner (some branches also have sit-in areas) and a butchery that stocks high-quality fresh beef, pork, chicken, and goat products. We serve a discerning customer, one who's interested in more than just seeing rock bottom prices. Our customers have told us they value excellent service, clean stores, a great range of products, and of course reasonable prices. These are the things we do best, and that is what makes shopping with us a pleasure. The Food World shopping experience is second to none – try it and feel the difference! Our focus is on bringing our customers the best shopping experience possible. How do we do this? Firstly, we ensure that we provide our customers with convenience. Our branches operate from 6.30am to 8.30pm every single day, including weekends and all public holidays. Our branches are also all located conveniently – most are clustered in the C.B.D, so that our customers never have to walk far to get to a branch. Secondly, we strive to provide you with world-class service. This means making sure you are served as quickly as possible at each point of interaction. Our friendly customer care team members are also always available to assist you by answering questions taking you to where products are, or even pushing your trolley for you during your entire shopping trip! Thirdly, we strive to ensure full availability of all in-demand products for each branch's market. Our buying system is geared to minimizing put-of-stocks, as we realize how frustrating it is for our customers to fail to fill their basket in one trip. Lastly, we employ world-class systems to ensure that we only sell the highest-quality products in a clean and hygienic environment. History The company that is today known as Food World was founded in December 1985, in the small satellite town of St. Mary's, Chitungwiza. In the small shopping center in that town, Maxwell Chisvo, his brother Innocent, and his wife Joyce opened a small supermarket after years of saving money from driving taxis and running tuckshops. From the start, the supermarket had an intense focus on customer satisfaction – the proprietors would travel the length of the city in search of the best deals and scarce products in order to meet the demands of their customers. By 1993 that shop had become so busy that it became necessary to open a second one – in the same shopping center! It was at this time that we joined the franchise supermarket group Spar, and the new shop was called Foodworld Spar. In 1997, we opened our third branch, which marked our first foray into the CBD. This branch was called West End Spar, and once again the focus on the customer and the attention to standards made it a roaring success. In 2002, the Board decided it was best for the business to leave the Spar franchise. The company became briefly associated with the Food Chain Group, a newly established local franchise, but soon it became evident that the benefits of franchising were few. So in 2002, the Board made the decision to stand independently as a family-owned and controlled business. A rebranding exercise took place, and the company came to be known as Food World.

In 1984, another retail brand called Express was introduced and its first store opened in Harare's Julius Nyerere Way. By 1988 there were 24 Express outlets.
