GAM-Solar’s activities started when it received a subsidy for a PV pilot project from the Dutch Government (DGIS, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) on the basis of a feasibility study conducted by Ecofys Consultants of The Netherlands in 1998. The project was a preparation for a large-scale program for implementation of (rural) solar electrification with the objective to provide household and business electricity through the installation of solar home systems and portable PV lanterns. Implementation of the pilot project was completed in April 2001. Since 2001, GAM-Solar has done major projects with funding from the EU, UN, Japan and other national and international organisations, see solar and water for villages.
